Kaliyattam  is a 1997 Indian Malayalam-language film directed by Jayaraaj. It stars Suresh Gopi, Lal, Manju Warrier, and Biju Menon.The film is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Othello set against the backdrop of the HinduTheyyam performance.Suresh Gopi plays Kannan Perumalayan, the equivalent to Othello. Lal plays Paniyan, the equivalent to Iago. Manju Warrier plays Thamara, the Desdemona version. And Biju Menon plays Kanthan, Cassio's role. Suresh Gopinathan (born 26 June 1959), commonly known as Suresh Gopi, is an Indian film actor, politician, and singer who has starred in over 200 Malayalam films. He currently serves as a Member of Parliament (M.P.) in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.   Suresh Gopi was born in Kollam, Kerala to Gnanalekshmi Amma and Gopinathan Pillai, a film distributor, as their eldest son. He has three younger brothers - Subhash Gopi, Sunil Gopi and Sanil Gopi (The latter two are twins). He had his primary education from Infant Jesus School Kollam.
